3PB have particular expertise in all types of inquest proceedings, offering barristers at all levels of seniority. Counsel represent both families of the deceased and other interested parties in all aspects of coronial law and at all stages of the inquest process, including issues of disclosure, pre inquest reviews and advocacy at the inquest, in inquests with and without a jury.  We are regularly  instructed to review following inquests and advise bereaved families and dependents on post inquest civil claims. Many barristers at 3PB are licensed to undertake work under the direct Public Access Scheme.

Our Inquest team has a strong reputation for its expertise and have acted as counsel to the coroner in some notable inquests, including:

  • Advising a bereaved family in the Amenas hostage crisis in 2013 when 39 foreign hostages were killed by terrorists;
  • The M5 firework crash of November 2011;
  • Representing the NHS following a high profile neonatal death which resulted from a failure to properly monitor the foetus during stage 2 contractions;
  • Re r an 8 day jury inquest into death of undercover policeman in Southampton. Public interest immunity regarding the operation the police were conducting at the time of the fatal accident;
  • Inquest touching on the death of a marathon runner who died of an ischaemic bowel through dehydration following taking superosmolar sports supplements and ibuprofen.
